For Western Mass. groups working with immigrants, a ‘roller coaster’ last few weeks

SPRINGFIELD — In late January, an Afghan refugee family was set to move into a new apartment with the help of Jewish Family Service of Western Massachusetts.

But on Jan. 24, just as the family needed a check to pay for the apartment, the organization got a stop work order for the federal reception and placement program, said Sara Bedford, chief operating officer of Jewish Family Service of Western Massachusetts.
