HOLYOKE — After nine years receivership, the Holyoke Schools will begin discussions with state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to determine how to return to local control, with the first meeting scheduled for Monday.
While Holyoke has asked the state many times to end receivership, this time is different, said Holyoke Mayor Joshua Garcia, who also chairs the Holyoke School Committee. There is an increased sense of collaboration between local officials and acting Education Commissioner Russell D. Johnston, he said.
