Over winter break in December, Erin Lawler, a former Amherst Middle School science teacher, began packing her car with classroom items such as her desk chair, plants, tea kettle, clipboards and other items she had used to decorate her classroom with just months earlier.
The classroom, to Lawler, was a “safe space” for her students and she wanted it to remain that way even after she said she was unexpectedly fired by the district. She left two car’s-worth of classroom materials including Christmas lights, posters and plants.
