Federal officials are expected to announce charges against 13 people on Tuesday in connection with what prosecutors described as a “sophisticated transnational elder fraud ring” that cheated older people out of millions.
U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Leah Foley will make the announcement at an 11 a.m. press conference on Tuesday.
The fraud ring was based in the Dominican Republic and tricked older people into handing over their life savings by posing as a grandchild in distress, FBI Boston wrote on X. Many of the victims are from New England.
The names of those set to be charged and the charges they will face were not immediately released Tuesday morning.
