A Chelsea father who had moved to the United States four years ago and was killed after a teen stabbed him in the back in July is being remembered for devotion to those he loved.
Santos Onorio Ponce-Cartagena, 39, of Chelsea, identified as Santos Cartagena by authorities, died at Beth Israel Hospital on July 21.
Investigators said he was involved in a brawl in Chelsea on July 20, and that video surveillance showed an 18-year-old take a kitchen knife from his backpack and stab Ponce-Cartagena with it. The teen, identified as Joksin Briones-Blandon, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with his death.
“He was devoted to his family, home, and work,” the father’s loved ones wrote in his obituary. Ponce-Cartagena had been born and raised in Honduras before he moved to Chelsea four years ago.
After coming to the United States, the 39-year-old worked as a fish and seafood processor for AB Seafood Company in Boston. He enjoyed music and working out, as he had a passion for personal fitness, his obituary read.
Ponce-Cartagena was a father to three children and had over a dozen brothers and sisters, his obituary read.
Visiting hours for Ponce-Cartagena were held in July. He will buried in the Punare Cementerio in Punare, Honduras.
