Two Massachusetts women used fake coupons to steal more than $26,000 in products from Stop & Shop and then sold the items at a discounted price, Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz’s office said.
Jacqueline White, 41, and Crystal Travis, 41, both pleaded not guilty to larceny by false pretense by single scheme and larceny to induce parting with personal property. White is also charged with aggravated organized retail theft.
From March 10 until June 2, the women used the fake coupons to steal hundreds of products worth $26,547, the district attorney’s office said.
Some of the coupons were purchased through Facebook, officials claimed. But White and Travis also made the coupons, according to the district attorney. The coupons were “high quality” with bar codes and graphics that looked similar to real coupons.
On one of their shopping trips, officials said the women purchased 366 items, including drinks, laundry detergent and dish soap, which would’ve cost $1,658.28. But with the fake coupons, they paid $3.28.
The women would then post the products on social media to sell them at a discounted price in Taunton.
Prosecutors asked that White be held on $10,000 cash bail. The court imposed a $3,000 cash bail and required White to stay away Stop & Shop stores in Massachusetts. Travis is also required to stay away from all Stop & Shop stores in the commonwealth.
