Ex-Patriots DB surprised at Bill Belichick’s TV persona

FOXBOROUGH — After his first game at Gillette Stadium since leaving the Patriots, Jalen Mills sought out some old friends on the sideline following the Patriots’ 25-22 win over New York Jet on Sunday.

Mills spent three seasons with New England before signing with the Giants in the offseason. But he was cut at the end of camp and the Jets’ signed him to their practice squad in the offseason. He was elevated to the 53-man roster on Wednesday and played a lot.

From a distance, Mills said it’s been unusual seeing Bill Belichick, his former coach, who he once admitted being in awe of, transition to his new role on television and in the media.

“I’ve been seeing him. He’s been talking a lot of noise, man,” said Mills, whose trademark green accented hair goes with his new team’s colors. “He’s been talking a lot of noise. But, I mean, you know, he’s a free agent right now, so he can do whatever he wants right now.”

He said he was surprised at just how much Belichick is saying after being famously taciturn while leading New England.

“He’s an open book right now. He talks noise,” Mills said, heavily emphasizing noise.

Mills was aware of the controversy around Jerod Mayo calling the Patriots soft, but didn’t want to wade into topic.

“I ain’t really pay too much into that. This game was a little personal for me. Regardless if he feel like they soft or not. I’ve been in that building. I know how those guys are. And my whole mindset this week was to go out there and play hard, play hard for the Jets, play hard for this team, hard for this organization, and go out there and try to get a win. So as far as him calling them soft, however they feel, however he feels, that stays with New England.”
