‘Eternal Echoes’ concert resonates through Springfield Symphony Hall

SPRINGFIELD — The works of Ennio Morricone, James Rutter and Tchaikovsky echoed through Symphony Hall as the Springfield Symphony Orchestra presented the “Eternal Echoes” concert on Saturday.

Guest conductor Cailin Marcel Manson led the musical afternoon, accompanied by the Springfield Symphony Chorus and guest soprano Jamie-Rose Guarrine.

The event saw the recognition of seven women who embody courage, resilience and empowerment at the SSO’s third annual Fearless Women Awards ceremony. The women were honored in five categories, including bravery, advocacy, passion, perseverance and authenticity.

The women honored were: Elizabeth Dineen, CEO, YWCA of Western Massachusetts; Katelyn Roberson, assistant nursing professor for the Division of Nursing, American International College; Ayanna Crawford, president/owner, AC Consulting and Media Services; Tania Barber president/CEO, Caring Health Center; Sara Hulseberg, owner of EXCEL Therapy & Conditioning; Lorraine Gorham, Massachusetts state director for Senior America; and Nora Schmidt, co-founder and president, Magic for Maddie Inc.

Musical selections in “Eternal Echoes” included “Gabriel’s Oboe,” John Rutter’s “Requiem,” and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. The symphony offered a compelling narrative of human struggle and triumph, featuring Tchaikovsky’s signature sweeping melodies and powerful orchestration.

Manson, baritone and conductor, studied voice performance at Temple University, and opera performance and orchestral conducting at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg. He has toured as a soloist and master teacher at major concert venues throughout the United States.

He recently made an acclaimed Carnegie Hall conducting debut with MidAmerica Productions in March 2023, leading Giuseppe “Verdi’s Messa da Requiem,” becoming the second Black person in the performance history of Carnegie Hall to conduct the work at that historic venue.

Guest soprano Jamie-Rose Guarrine is a local talent, who is assistant professor of voice at the University of Massachusetts.
