English learners have some of the state’s lowest MCAS scores. But that’s not the whole story.

A small group of international students at Springfield High School of Science and Technology — and their test results — illustrate a much larger discussion playing out across the state, one that will lead voters to the ballot box in November.

In 2023, 96% of English language learners enrolled in the vocational school’s International Academy scored in the “not meeting expectations” category for the 10th grade English language arts MCAS, representing the highest percentage of students of any school in the state who failed to pass the required standardized test.
