Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt said last week he wasn’t a fan of dialing up designed running plays for rookie quarterback Drake Maye.
Van Pelt figures Maye runs enough on the occasions he takes off from the pocket, he doesn’t need to add on.
The Patriots quarterback agreed.

During his weekly appearance on WEEI’s afternoon show, Maye, who rushed for 95 yards on eight carries in Sunday’s overtime loss to the Tennessee Titans, wasn’t an advocate of adding designed run plays to take advantage of his skillset.
“I think kind of just dropping back there, taking advantage of the rush lanes, and little things like that, finding enough ways to make plays with my feet, and trying to extend plays, hitting Pop on a crosser late over the middle to extend plays, I think we have enough of that in our offense,” he said. “I think running the football is tough on my body.
“Taking some extra hits we may not need, when you have a big-time back like Rhamondre, and those guys, AG (Antonio Gibson) and (Ja’mycal) Hasty, when you got backs like those guys, especially ‘Mondre, I think you want to give him the ball and let him run rather than me.”
Currently, Maye has gained 209 yards on 21 carries with a touchdown in five games. His 10.0 yards per carry is tops on the team.
