BOSTON — With two months of the season now in the rearview mirror, Tanner Houck has pulled away from the pack as the clear No. 1 starter in the Red Sox rotation. But is he worthy of being called an ace? It’s a question manager Alex Cora didn’t shy away from after Houck’s latest gem against the Tigers on Friday night.
“It’s really good and I don’t think people are paying attention to it,” Cora said. “He went seven today and it was like, ‘OK, cool.’ He’s one of the best pitchers in the big leagues. Every outing, he’s giving us a chance to win. Changing speeds, throwing strikes with his split. Lefties, righties, it really doesn’t matter right now.
