Disney bids farewell to ‘offensive’ character after 50 years

While working on the installation of a new Country Bear Musical Jamboree, Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom has announced the removal of a 50-year-old character citing concerns over the name being “derogatory” and “offensive.”

Liver Lips McGrowl, who’s been a member of the Country Bear Jamboree since 1971, along with Big Al, Henry, Trixie, Wendell, Teddi Barra and Ernest, has been removed, according to Disney’s blog “InsideTheMagic.”

“…The decision to remove Liver Lips McGrowl was driven by concerns over the character’s name,” the blog stated. “The term ‘liver lips’ is considered derogatory and offensive, as it is associated with excessive alcohol consumption and the resulting liver damage.”

The Disney blog added that “the phrase is deemed to be insensitive and outdating” therefore “prompting Disney’s decision to modify the character.”

The park’s refurbished attraction replaced Liver Lips McGrowl with a new character named Romeo McGrowl whose “appearance remains largely unchanged” in an effort to create “a more inclusive and respectful environment for its guests.”

Disney added that similar initiatives have been taken in recent years, such as making changes to Splash Mountain and the Jungle Cruise.

“These attractions underwent significant modifications to remove stereotypical and offensive portrayals of indigenous peoples and animals,” the blog reads. “The changes reflect Disney’s growing awareness of the need to adapt its offerings to align with contemporary values and expectations.”
