A Canadian-based pizza chain is bringing its signature Detroit-style pizza to Massachusetts for the first time.
Descendant Detroit Style Pizza is expected to open inside the Prudential Center in Boston by the end of January, owner Sotirios “Ike” Tzars told MassLive.
The restaurant’s menu will feature Descendants’ signature pies, including the “Gat Daddy” (sausage, peppers, red onions, basil aioli, and fresh herbs) and “Electric Avenue” (Jerk chicken, pineapple, green onions, chives, curried lime aioli, peppers and hot sauce).
“Everything is made in-house, and we are excited to offer high-quality Detroit-style pizzas with a unique twist,” Tzars said in an email.
Descendent’s name comes from Sicilian pizza, Tzars said in a video on the restaurant’s website. The owner, who took over the business in 2022, said he learned how to make pizza from working in his parents’ pizza shop in Boston.
Descendent’s pizza is characterized by its thick and chewy Sicilian crust that is covered in mounds of cheese and toppings then finished with sauce. The square pies are often referred to as being upside down because the sauce is on top.
The pizza has gotten a stamp of approval from Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, who also is known for his One Bite Pizza Reviews. Portnoy reviewed Descendent in Toronto back in 2022 and rated the pizza an 8.1 out of 10.
“Very, very good,” Portnoy said of the pizza. “This is as good as a Detroit style you can have.”
Descendent first opened in August 2015 and has two locations in Toronto. The Boston restaurant will therefore be the first Descendent location in the United States, as well.
