Damaging winds could come to Mass. on Sunday, followed by heavy rainfall through Monday

Friday and most of the weekend in Massachusetts should be warm and dry before strong to damaging winds, followed by heavy rain, possibly hit the state late Sunday night and into Monday.

Cloud cover is expected to slowly increase between Friday and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

Highs on Friday should be mostly in the 50s, with Boston reaching a high of 51 degrees, Worcester seeing a high of 55 and 58 in Springfield, the National Weather Service stated in a post on X. The Cape and Islands should see temperatures in the mid- to high 40s.

Temperatures on Saturday are expected to be warmer, into the 60s, forecasters said. Conditions should become more humid on Saturday, which could also see lightly increasing winds.

“Low risk for alate day stray shower or two, but not enough to mention in the forecast at this time,” forecasters wrote.

After a quiet Saturday night, temperatures on Sunday should be warmer with urban areas and the Connecticut River Valley seeing highs around 65 degrees, forecasters said. The Merrimack Valley could see highs even reach close to 70 degrees.

By the evening, winds are expected to pick up further and produce strong to damaging wind gusts, forecasters said. Heavy rain is expected to follow that night and into Monday, with most of the region possibly seeing between 1 and a half to 2 inches, while the Cape and Islands could see over 1 and a half inches over a 24-hour period.

“Possible river rises along more major rivers due to the combination of heavy rain and any remaining snowmelt are another facet of this system, along with higher tidal levels, particularly during the Sunday night high tide,” forecasters wrote.

Rainfall in Boston could start to fall after 12 p.m. on Sunday but should be mostly present after 9 p.m., according to the forecast. Rain should continue to fall until around 7 p.m. on Monday. Winds on Sunday are expected to be between 10 and 16 mph, with gusts reaching 31 mph.

Springfield could start seeing rain at around 4 p.m. on Sunday and should continue until around 1 p.m. on Monday. Winds should be between 14 and 20 mph, with gusts at around 33 mph.

In Worcester, winds are expected to be between 13 and 20 mph, with gusts at around 36 mph. Rain could start to fall as early as 3 p.m. on Sunday, and be on-and-off until the evening, according to The Weather Channel. By around 4 p.m. on Monday, rainfall should stop, the Weather Service reported.

Tuesday should see a return of dry conditions, with temperatures in the 60s, forecasters said. However, another storm around Thursday could bring more rain.
