Crash that killed pedestrian closes major Boston intersection

An early Wednesday morning crash that killed a pedestrian is being investigated by police and has shut down the intersection at Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard, known as Mass and Cass.

Police received word of the crash shortly after 4:30 a.m. When they arrived at the intersection of Melnea Cass Boulevard and Hampden Street, they found one adult man with life-threatening injuries, who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Boston Police spokesman Jason Villanueva.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian remained in the area and cooperated with police, Villanueva said.

Police are not releasing the names of the victim or driver at this time, Villanueva said.

Traffic is closed Wednesday morning in both directions on Massachusetts Avenue, Melnea Cass Boulevard, Albany Street and Hampden Street. A traffic advisory from the Boston police advises drivers to seek an alternate route.

Traffic was backed up to the highway in the area, according to WCVB.

When will the traffic be opened back up again? “No time soon,” Villanueva said shortly after 7 a.m.

Boston police will continue to provide updates on when traffic opens up on their twitter page, he added.
