Community Foundation pauses student loan program over racial inequality concerns

SPRINGFIELD — Racial wealth inequality and a national student loan crisis have led the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts to pause its student loan program.

“The pause will allow us to ensure that the funding we provide is having the greatest possible benefit for students and is not causing harm by adding to the debt burden that so many students face,” Denise Hurst, the foundation’s vice president of community impact and partnerships, wrote in an email to The Republican.
