Cold air, high winds to create below-zero wind chills in much of Mass. this week

A cold front drifts into Massachusetts Tuesday, bringing a shot of cold air and gusting winds that will lead to highs in the low to mid-20s, though it will feel much colder.

National Weather Service forecasters say Bay Staters can expect wind gusts around 30 to 40 mph throughout the day, with a chance for some gusts to clock in faster, around 50 mph, particularly in The Berkshires. It’s expected to be a dry day for much of the state, but there is a chance for some flurries Tuesday morning, though no accumulating snow is in the forecast.

The forecast for Wednesday and Thursday is much the same as Tuesday, with highs barely climbing to the mid-20s and feels-like temperatures in the teens to single digits.

Some relief from the bitter cold will arrive Friday when temperatures are expected to moderate and wind speeds should decrease. While it won’t be warm, highs will be in the mid and upper 30s, according to the weather service.

The next chance for precipitation in Massachusetts comes this weekend, but uncertainty reigns about the exact track of a coastal storm developing now as an area of low pressure over Southern California. At least one model suggests a chance of 3 or more inches of snow, but forecasters say the odds of a high-impact winter storm are low and the system is likely to miss New England to the south.
