HOLYOKE — The Christmas Tree Shops location in the Holyoke Crossing will close Saturday, Aug. 12, along with the rest of the Middleboro-based chain’s remaining locations.
Some locations already closed on July 30, including Massachusetts stores in Natick, North Dartmouth, Orleans, Pembroke and West Dennis.
Besides Holyoke, locations closing Aug. 12 include Avon, Foxboro, Hyannis, Lynnfield, North Attleboro, Shrewsbury and Somerville, according to an online update.
Hilco Global is running the liquidation.
Christmas Tree Shops’ current owners filed for bankruptcy in late June citing tight credit and an inability to restock its shelves.
Online, Christmas Tree Shops advertises discounts of 30% to 80% and also offers store fixtures for sale.
The store in Holyoke Crossing, at 45 Holyoke St., opened in 2022 as what was to have been the first of a major rebranding and renewal for the 53-year-old Christmas Tree Shops.
In 2020 final owners Marc Salkovitz and his wife, Pam Salkovitz, bought the chain from troubled retailer Bed Bath & Beyond. They changed the branding to CTS with Christms Tree Shops in smaller print.
The stores tried to offer seasonal holiday decor for all the seasons, beachy in summer and scary in fall. Outdoor furniture was one of the biggest sellers.
When they opened the new Holyoke store in 2022, the Salkovitzes had 5,400 Christmas Tree Shops employees and 80 stores. They had planned to increase to 84 stores by the end of last year.
The older-style Christmas Tree Shops location in the Holyoke Mall opened in 1996 and closed soon after the new one opened.
Husband-and-wife team Charles and Doreen Bilezikian opened the first Christmas Tree Shops in 1970 in Yarmouth Port. The name is plural because originally the store was spread over several buildings.
