The Celtics have some housekeeping to figure out now after they brought home Banner No. 18 and all the festivities are behind them. First and foremost, C’s coach Joe Mazzulla will have his staff shaken up a bit with lead assistant Charles Lee headed to Charlotte as the Hornets head coach.
To fill that spot, the Celtics seemingly already have Mazzulla’s next lead assistant. The C’s plan to promote Sam Cassell to that position, per NBA insider Marc Stein. Cassell has been rumored to be a potential hire for other teams across the league, so the promotion should keep him in Boston going forward.

Cassell, 54, joined Mazzulla’s staff last summer, coming after a a multi-year stint with the Sixers. He also served as an assistant coach with the Wizards and Clippers as he’s been in the coaching ranks for years. Cassell brought some much-needed former playing experience to the coaching staff as he had a long, successful NBA career. Cassell won three rings as a player, including with the 2008 Celtics team.
While Mazzulla’s staff will see some movement, it likely won’t be as much as last summer. Back then, a bulk of his staff from the 2022-23 season found homes elsewhere, including with former C’s coach Ime Udoka in Houston. That’s no surprise as a huge part of that staff was hired by Udoka prior to the 2021-22 season. But this time, Mazzulla should have some stability going forward without too many changes.
The Celtics will now look forward to the 2024-25 season as they’ll look to repeat as champions. That starts with the smaller details like Mazzulla’s staff, along with the big events like the 2024 NBA Draft, set for June 26-27 in Brooklyn.
