Celtics’ Jaylen Brown reveals Ice Cube texted him after supermax extension

Predictably, Jaylen Brown’s phone started blowing up with congratulations calls and texts after news of his supermax extension with the Celtics circulated earlier this week. Teammate Robert Williams III and Celtic-turned-Maverick Grant Williams both tried to FaceTime call Brown, but he didn’t pick up.

Brown, speaking at his news conference after the lucrative extension, said he didn’t even know he missed both the Williams’ respective calls. That’s natural considering Brown secured generational wealth as part of the deal. But Brown revealed a few people got some texts back when he scrolled through his phone.

“I think Ice Cube got a response,” Brown told NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg in an interview. “I mean, you can’t not respond to Ice Cube. It was a couple names in there that I made sure they got one. Even family members, I’ll try to get to them tomorrow or something. I appreciate everybody nonetheless. If you’re watching this video, I appreciate it. I don’t gotta text you because I said it right here.”

Brown officially signed his five-year extension worth up to $304 million on Wednesday at the MIT Media Lab. His Bridge program held a multi-day camp for Black and Brown high school students, where they learned about STEAM-related opportunities. Brown said he heard his extension was agreed upon earlier in the week when he was in a robotics class with the students.

The news conference was a celebration of sorts as the Celtics secured Brown’s long-term future in Boston. Now it’s about recharging the batteries ahead of training camp, which should open in late-September. In the meantime, Brown will be busy responding to everyone who reached out.

“I feel bad when everybody reaches out,” Brown said. “You want to reach back out to everybody. You can be one of those people that selects a few. I’m one where it’s like, ignore everybody. Everybody gets the same treatment.”
