Bruins legend completes 1st ‘Ironman’ event

Zdeno Chara has run several marathons and a half-ironman during his post-hockey life, and the Bruins legend continued to give the phrase “built different” a new meaning when he completed an Ironman on Sunday.

According to sports journalist Lubos Brabec, Chara completed the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2 marathon run in 10 hours and 20 minutes. The marathon took the 47-year-old 3:27, which was three minutes faster than his 2024 Boston Marathon finishing time.

Chara posted photos from the event to his Instagram with his team and their medals around their necks.

Marathon’s have become part of Chara’s routine since retiring from the NHL in 2022. He’s constantly pushed himself when it comes to staying in shape. In the last 15 months, the 47-year-old has run eight marathons, completed a half Ironman, a 50-kilometer trail race and several road races.

Staying active and in shape has become a staple in Chara’s post-hockey career. He’s even tried to get fellow retired teammate and former Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron to join him, but Bergeron said he doesn’t believe his knees or hips could keep up.

In September, Chara told The New York Post that he’d like to run al of the “major marathons,” which Tokyo, London, Berlin and Chicago. He’ll cross London off the list this weekend, and it will likely only be a matter of time before the 6-foot-9 Chara completes all of them.

It’s unclear what event is next on the docket for Chara, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him take part in another marathon, road race or Ironman-type of endurance event in the near future.
