Jeremy Swayman wouldn’t say so. Certainly not in front of his girlfriend’s mother Monique, who stood next to him during his postgame press conference.
But for a Bruins team that badly needed a victory, Swayman stole one. He stopped 40 shots to end Boston’s six-game winless streak and in the 4-3 overtime win over the defending Stanley Cup champs to complete the Bruins’ annual Mom’s Trip with a victory.
“It’s a team game, every time,” said Swayman deflecting credit like a shot from the point. “My guys are doing a great job of letting me see the first shot and clearing out rebounds and blocking shots as well. That’s all momentum for us going forward. It’s really good for us to get the result.”
David Pastrnak, who had the game-winning goal in overtime, said Swayman’s early play made it possible for the Bruins to find their game late.
“He was great. He gives a chance to win every game,” Pastrnak said. “He was big again today, especially in the first when we were very slow and they were all over us.”
Bruins interim coach Joe Sacco shared his star forward’s assessment.
“He was the difference in the game. The goalie played very well tonight,” he said. “That’s what you need sometimes when you’re going through a situation like we are. (Florida) played very well. He was the difference in the game.”
With the Bruins hovering just above the playoff line, Swayman said they need to build from here.
“It’s good to get wins against high-quaility opponents. They made us earn that,” he said. “We have to keep going forward and moving forward for the next one.”
