Bruins frustrated by nature of forward’s injury

BOSTON — One Islanders goalie beat the Bruins. The other sent a promising young Boston forward to the shelf.

After the game, the Bruins tipped their collective hat to Ilya Sorokin, whose 37 saves counteracted the Bruins’ advantage in shots and play in New York’s 2-1 win.

But they were frustrated with Islander backup Jakub Skarek. Nobody thought the play was intentional, but Skarek opened the door for a line change with the play close to the bench.

Because of that, when Brock Nelson hit Matt Poitras, the Bruins forward’s leg slammed into the corner of the open door-mouth instead of the flat boards.

Poitras headed to the dressing room and didn’t return.

Bruins interim coach Joe Sacco wasn’t sure the extent of the injury.

“I don’t have an update,” he said. “I’ll have something more tomorrow morning.”

David Pastrnak was more disappointed to lose Poitras than mad at Skarek.

“It’s unfortunate. As a player, you make sure the door is always closed,” he said. “You don’t want to see that and you definitely don’t want to see a guy push him into it. Hopefully, Matty is going to be all right.”

Nikita Zadorov agreed.

“It was the backup goalie opening the door?” he asked, making sure he had the sequence right. “You’ve got to be a little more patient. It’s just a hockey play. You hate to see a young guy go down. He’s been playing really well for us.”
