Morgan Geekie had plenty to be frustrated about after Thursday’s loss to the Lightning, but the Bruins forward still appreciated the unique moment of being able to face his younger brother Conor.
“It was special,” Morgan Geekie said. “It’s unfortunate the way it turned out. But it’s an experience not many people get to have. I’m super proud of him.”
Morgan Geekie, 26, is six years older than his brother. This was the first time the two Manitoba natives have played against each other in an organized sport.
Conor Geekie, who won’t turn 21 until May, is in his first season in the NHL. The Arizona Coyotes picked him 11th overall in the 2024 NHL Draft but then traded him to Tampa in a deal before they became the Utah Hockey Club.
He has five goals and six assists in 36 games and played 11:25 over 15 shifts against the Bruins.
Morgan Geekie played 17:40 over 22 shifts and had two shots and three hits in the game.
Both of their parents were in attendance although they arrived separately. Tobi Geekie came as part of the Bruins’ annual “Mom’s Trip” where players’ mothers travel with the team. They’ll stay aboard through Saturday’s game against the Panthers in Sunrise, Florida
The two brothers posed for a pregame picture. While Morgan Geekie has short hair and a full set of front teeth, Conor looks every bit like the beloved hockey stereotype with long hair and a big gap in his upper front teeth. Still the resemblance is obvious.
“He’s awesome. He gives me tips. He doesn’t overwhelm me with them,” Conor Geekie said before the game. “He’s one of my best friends for a reason. He’s been a role model. … He taught me how to compete and that’s kind of who I am.”
