BOSTON — Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy was admitted to Mass General Hospital on Monday after suffering an upper-body injury according to a report in the Boston Globe.
McAvoy, who’d been having a strong tournament, missed Team USA’s 2-1 loss to Sweden in the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off on Monday.
It’s unclear the severity of the injury and whether it would either be possible for him to return for Thursday’s championship game against Canada or if he could miss time for the Bruins, who return to action on Saturday against Anaheim.
Earlier in the day, Sullivan said that McAvoy, who had participated in morning skate at Boston University, would sit out the game as Jake Sanderson stepped into the lineup. At the time, it looked like Sullivan was just giving McAvoy, who has had a physically taxing tournament, a night off.
But after the game, Sullivan said McAvoy was dealing with an upper-body injury.
“Charlie obviously right now is out with an upper body injury,” Sullivan said after the game.
McAvoy missed seven games for the Bruins in January with an undisclosed injury that put the defenseman on injured reserve.
