Bruins can clinch division Monday, here’s what it means to them

If the Bruins beat the Capitals on Monday in Washington D.C. or the Senators in Boston on Tuesday they’ll clinch the Atlantic Division title.

There are other ways they can get there, but simply winning one of their last two games is the most direct route.

They aren’t likely to sell a lot “2023-24 Atlantic Division Champion” commemorative merchandise and it won’t be remembered when the playoffs start. But given the roster overhaul they had to endure, it’s a noteworthy accomplishment. After losing not just Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci, but those two icons and Taylor Hall, Dmitry Orlov, Tyler Bertuzzi, Nick Foligno, Connor Clifton and Garnet Hathaway, the Bruins came together and will likely finish with one of the top five records in the NHL.

Brad Marchand said he doesn’t care about the division title, but was proud of how the Bruins rebuilt and remained a good team despite the roster turnover.

“It shows how well we came together as a group. There was a lot of adversity that we had to go through,” the Bruins captain said. “It speaks volumes that we’ve found ways to win. A lot of people wrote us off before the season even started. We just kept grinding away and trying to get better. We’re playing really good hockey right now and competing hard. I like where we’re at. However it unfolds and finishes up it’s not a big deal. We did what we wanted to do coming into the season – get a playoff spot.”

Jim Montgomery said he’d rather finish first than not, but his focus is on getting his team to play well heading into the postseason.

“It’s nice to have home ice and we’re fighting for first. But we’re worried about our game getting ready for the playoffs,” he said. “We’re thinking about Game 1 of the playoffs. Whether we’re first or second? It would be nice to be first, but that’s not as paramount as our game being ready.”
