Boston street shut again down due to early morning water main break, police say

Boston’s Tremont Street shut down on Friday after a water main break, the second time in the same area, the Boston Police Department announced.

“Traffic is impacted in the area of 791 Tremont St. in lower Roxbury due to a water main break,” the police department posted on X. “Motorists are advised to seek an alternative route.”

Water made its way to one basement at an apartment on that street, though other basement residential units were not impacted, Boston Fire Department Captain Michael Feeney told WHDH.

The water main break damaged part of the road and partially submerged an SUV parked along the street, NBC 10 Boston reported. The SUV was eventually towed.

The area of Tremont Street between Camden Street and Massachusetts Avenue was partially closed to traffic to allow fire crews to tow the SUV, WHDH wrote. Crews remained in the area until at least 5 a.m.

With one lane open for inbound traffic, fire and water crews could be in the area for several hours or possibly the whole day, NBC wrote.

MassLive reached out to the Boston Fire Department for more information.

On Oct. 1, a 20-inch water main broke and left significant damage to the road, the Boston Water and Sewer Commission posted on X. Officials excavated to replace 16 feet around the water main with a “new pipe and [a] contractor will pave [the] entire affected section, the commission wrote in a follow-up post.
