Boston police have arrested a suspect they say stabbed a man in Dorchester Saturday morning and then broke into a resident’s basement while trying to flee from officers.
Roxbury resident Kelvin Ortiz, 30, has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, breaking and entering in the daytime to commit a felony and trespassing, Boston police said in a press release.
Officers responded to the area of Columbia Road and Stoughton Street in Dorchester for a report of a person stabbed around 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 31, police said. At the scene, they found a man with a stab wound.
Paramedics took the man to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Before leaving the scene, the man was able to point towards a fleeing suspect who was near the intersection of Columbia Road and Dudley Street.
Officers began to chase after the suspect — who was later identified as Ortiz — and notified nearby officers that he was now on a bicycle, police said. They canvassed the area and soon found Ortiz on Gene Street as he was getting off the bicycle.
Ortiz jumped a fence, but officers were soon flagged down on Humphreys Street where they were told he had broken into a resident’s basement, police said. Ortiz tried to flee the basement, but officers arrested him on Wendover Street.
Ortiz is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
