The Patriots got their third win of the season on Sunday when they handily defeated the Bears, 19-3, at Soldier Field. Rookie quarterback Drake Maye showed more promise and the defense stepped up its game to deliver a strong performance.
While appearing on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Monday, Bill Belichick was asked about Maye and his thoughts on the rookie emerging as a leader. And while New England’s former coach offered up praise for Maye, he quickly critiqued Chicago and how bad of a game it played.
“Well, I think he’s done a good job when he’s been able to scramble and run around,” Belichick said of Maye. “Made some plays on play action where they can separate the defense because the running game, when (Rhamondre) Stevenson can get it going, draws some of the coverage and the linebackers up, and so forth.

“But to me, the bigger thing is just where the Bears are. I mean, they can’t protect, they can’t move the ball, they can’t score any points,” he continued. “… In Chicago, they have this all-star quarterback, these all-star receivers, the greatest skill players in the history of football. And the offensive line is a problem. They can’t run the ball, they can’t protect.”
The Bears allowed Caleb Williams to get sacked nine times in Sunday’s loss and 38 times this season. Their pass protection has been abysmal and hasn’t done much to protect the 2024 No. 1 draft pick and give him a proper chance to succeed.
Belichick has been quiet on the Patriots and their players for much of this season. He critiqued coach Jerod Mayo for his “soft” comments, but hasn’t said too much when it comes to his former team.
