Bill Belichick was shut out of the 2024 coaching cycle after he parted ways with the New England Patriots earlier this year. But apparently, the legendary coach had an opportunity on the West Coast.
San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan revealed on The Athletic’s “The TK Show” with Tim Kawakami that he reached out to Belichick and was interested in bringing him in to be the team’s defensive coordinator — but was open to him having other roles, as well.
“I threw it out to him. He loves football so much. … I can’t believe he’s not a head coach of a team right now,” Shanahan told Kawakami. “I know what I would do if I was an owner so that shocks me and the last thing you want to do is insult someone like Bill Belichick. But I know he just loves ball in its simplest form, so I threw it all out to him, whatever he wanted to do. I was like ‘Would you be interested?’ And he was very nice and appreciative and he politely turned me down.”

While he doesn’t have a team to coach for the 2024 season, Belichick will still be plenty busy. He’ll join the CW’s “Inside The NFL” alongside Ryan Clark, Chad Johnson and Chris Long, as well as be a recurring guest on “The Pat McAfee Show” and the “Manningcast” during “Monday Night Football.”
It’s possible Belichick returns to the sideline in 2025 — which is something Shanahan wouldn’t be surprised to see.
“I’m sure he’s going to be back in the league next year and I could be going against him. He could be in the NFC West. It would have sucked if he came here and then he was going against us,” he told Kawakami. So that’s the stuff you have to be careful about. But he’s the best and I just like talking to him.”
It will be interesting to see what comes next for Belichick a year from now and whether he remains in TV or goes back to his coaching roots.
