When Matthew Judon was traded to the Atlanta Falcons from the New England Patriots, one big question was whether he would sign a contract extension with his new team. That hasn’t happened, and it’s come as a bit of a surprise to his former coach.
“I’m kind of surprised Atlanta didn’t, or hasn’t, extended Judon’s contract. I think he’s pretty undervalued for what his contract is based on the way it was set up there,” Bill Belichick said during his weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Monday. “It was kind of a complicated situation.”
If Judon, who’s entering the final year of his contract, does indeed leave in free agency next year, the Falcons will receive a compensatory pick. And while the four-time Pro Bowler had a public contract dispute with the Patriots prior to his trade, it’s something Judon wants to work for in the 2024 season with the Falcons.
“The Atlanta Falcons know nothing about me as a football player and about me as a man. They really know my previous résumé,” Judon told reporters earlier this month. “So, I can’t really demand or ask for anything that I haven’t worked for. And that’s where I’ve been my whole life. So, I’m (going to) work for it, man.”
Judon is coming off a 2023 season that was limited to just four games after a biceps injury ended his year early. He was a staple on the Patriots defense, and looks to have a bounce-back year with a fresh start in Atlanta.
