As ranks of organ donors thin, families share life-saving stories

SPRINGFIELD — John Shea Scagliarini was in his final year at the University of Massachusetts Amherst when he called his mother in Wilbraham to say he wasn’t feeling well. Mary Lou Crowley rushed to the campus and brought her son to the doctor.

“We thought he had pneumonia or the flu. But the doctor called 911 immediately because John was blue from lack of oxygen,” Crowley told The Republican.
