Arts Beat: Jazz legend helms radio show, ‘Unreconciled’ takes stage again

Avery Sharpe, international jazz great who calls the Pioneer Valley home, is hosting New England Public Media’s flagship jazz program, “Jazz a la Mode,” once a week beginning Nov. 3. Sharpe is a world-renowned bassist, composer and educator with deep roots in Western Massachusetts. Along with Wynton and Branford Marsalis, he was one of the Young Lions of jazz who came to prominence in the 1980s. Sharpe worked with McCoy Tyner for many years and has recorded and performed with numerous jazz luminaries including Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, Archie Shepp and others. “Unreconciled,” an autobiographical play written by Jay Sefton with Mark Basquill, was quite the hit last summer at Chester Theatre, where James Barry directed Sefton in the piece about a young theater student cast in a play by a pedophile priest, and the student’s road to survival.
