Another familiar face is heading to North Carolina with Bill Belichick.
Former Patriots strength and conditioning coach Moses Cabrera is set to join the Tar Heels in a similar role, according to Inside Carolina. Cabrera spent 13 years under Belichick in New England, starting as an assistant strength coach from 2011-2015 and then ascending into the head strength and conditioning coach gig from 2016-2023. He won three Super Bowl rings in Foxborough and was replaced by Deron Mayo after Belichick’s dismissal.
At North Carolina, Cabrera will join a couple more former Patriots staffers in defensive coordinator Steve Belichick and general manager Michael Lombardi. It’s unknown if any current New England employees will join Belichick, but safeties coach Brian Belichick and cornerbacks coach Mike Pellegrino could be a couple candidates, especially following Jerod Mayo’s firing.
Asked about joining his father in Carolina last month, Brian Belichick would only say he was focused on New England’s next opponent. However, he wasn’t surprised that the 72-year-old was getting back on the sidelines, even at the college level.
“He loves coaching. And opportunities present themselves in different ways,” Brian Belichick said. “I think he would love coaching a number of different things. He would love coaching lacrosse, I think if he wasn’t coaching football. He’d probably love teaching if he wasn’t coaching sports. I think it’s something he’s great at, obviously. This is the opportunity and I think it’s awesome. UNC’s a great school, football program, exciting fan base nationally down there. Not that I have a lot of background on it, but people are excited and that’s great.
“Really happy for my dad. A lot of people are excited, including him. It’s going to be fun to watch. He loves coaching football. It’s what he should be doing. It’s going to be great. It’s really exciting. Really happy for him and think we’re all excited to watch it.”
