Additional police at West Newbury school after social media threats

A threat against Pentucket Regional Middle and High School in West Newbury was made on social media.

On Wednesday, the West Newbury Police Department was notified by a social media platform of a threat that was posted online against Pentucket Regional Middle and High School. Police immediately informed the school district, and an investigation was launched, officials said in a press release.

The student that posted the threat was quickly identified, officials said. The names of the student and social media platform were not released.

There was an increased police presence at the school on Wednesday. Additional police were expected to be at the school again on Thursday.

Families were reminded to talk with their children about the “dangers of misusing social media and the serious consequences it can bring.”

“Student safety is our priority. We’re committed to always working with our communities to ensure schools are secure and every child can learn safely,” Police Chief Michael Dwyer said.

The incident remains under investigation by the West Newbury Police.
