Abner Gibbs building eyed for Westfield High School credit recovery program

WESTFIELD — The current Abner Gibbs Elementary School building could become the new home of Westfield’s Pathways high school credit recovery program, the superintendent said recently.

Elementary pupils and teachers are expected to vacate the building on West Silver Street in the middle of the 2024-25 school year, when the new Westfield River Elementary School opens, merging Abner Gibbs with Franklin Avenue Elementary School in one new building on Franklin Street.

Pathways currently meets at the city-owned Camp Togowauk on Russell Road, where space constraints limit its enrollment to 50 students. Superintendent Stefan Czaporowski said there would be more space at Abner Gibbs. Abner Gibbs had an enrollment of 185 pupils in 2023-24, according to data compiled by the state.
