The Dallas Cowboys say they’re weary of the New England Patriots trying to pry their secrets from one of their former quarterbacks.
On Tuesday, Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said he’s sure that former Dallas quarterback Will Grier “is definitely being interrogated” by the Patriots coaching staff to try and glean any information they can about the offense.
Schottenheimer said he expects they’ll ask former Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott about plays, signals and concepts as well.

“We’re always aware of it,” Schottenheimer said. “Those are things we monitor every week. But we know Will knows where a lot of the bones are buried. Zeke does as well. So those are things you talk about and you think, ‘OK, let’s adjust this.’ We certainly have more than one hand signal for most of our core concepts.”
Grier played for the Cowboys from 2021-2022 and served as a reserve quarterback behind Dak Prescott and backup Cooper Rush during his time in Dallas. The Patriots acquired Grier last week after signing him off of the Bengals practice squad.
Given Grier’s knowledge of the Cowboys’ scheme, Schottenheimer is confident that Bill Belichick and the Patriots will try to pick the quarterback’s brain to decipher any hand signals or calls. Schottenheimer said they’ll be changing up their signals to avoid tipping plays to New England.

“You can use it to your advantage because they think they know what’s coming and they hear something and they think, ‘It’s this’ and we’re smart enough to adjust those things,” Schottenheimer said. “Everybody does it, you get a player that’s been somewhere, you talk to him about different things, and then you’re very selective about how much you put into it. Excited to see Will, it’ll be great to see him, but I’m sure he is definitely being interrogated and spending a lot of late nights with their defensive coaching staff.”
Meanwhile, in New England, Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien laughed off the idea of “interrogating” the quarterback, but admitted that gathering information is part of the week-to-week process. However, he said that getting information from players about their former teams has never been the overriding factor in a team getting a win.
The Patriots are set to take on the Cowboys at 4:25 p.m. on Sunday in a Week 4 matchup.
