A Springfield police officer suspended from duty and facing a pair of criminal charges after his supervisors found he threw his girlfriend to the ground and handcuffed her was not read his Miranda rights before his arrest, according to a recent court ruling.
The statements made by Jeffrey Alicea — a two-year member of the Springfield Police Department who is charged in a domestic violence incident on April 15 — to his superiors prior to his arrest will not be allowed as evidence while his case moves forward in district court.
Alicea is currently suspended by the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission due to the ongoing case. He pleaded not guilty on April 18 to two charges; assault and battery on a household member and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
