Former Red Sox outfielder designated for assignment

Hunter Renfroe, who spent the 2021 season with the Red Sox before being traded away, has been designated for assignment by the Cincinnati Reds.

Renfroe was claimed on waivers by the Reds last month. Renfroe, 31, had been placed on waivers by the Los Angeles Angels, who placed a half-dozen players on irrevocable waivers in an effort to get under the competitive balance tax (CBT) threshold.

After spending the first four years of his major league career with the San Diego Padres, Renfroe has bounced all over MLB.

He spent 2020 with Tampa Bay, 2021 with the Red Sox, 2022 with the Milwaukee Brewers, and saw time with both the Angels and Reds this season.

In 2021, signed as a free agent, Renfroe had what was arguably his best season, with a career high in RBI and an OPS of 816. But just before the start of the lockout in December, Renfroe was traded to Milwaukee in exchange for former Sox outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. and two prospects.

Since being claimed by Cincinnati, Renfroe hasn’t produced much, going 5-for-39 with one homer and four RBI in 14 games.

It’s doubtful anyone will claim Renfroe now, since there are fewer than two weeks remaining in the regular season and because we’re past Sept. 1, he wouldn’t be eligible for the postseason with a new team.

And, after playing for six different franchises since 2019, it’s quite likely that Renfroe could well be on his way to a seventh in the span of six seasons since he’s eligible for free agency this offseason.
