UPDATE: As of 8 a.m. on Sept. 18, Massachusetts State Police said it may take three or more hours to reopen all lanes on I-93.
Masses of junkyard debris spilled across Interstate 93 in Wilmington on Monday morning after a tractor-trailer rolled over on the highway, backing up traffic nearly to the New Hampshire border, according to Massachusetts State Police.
The department got to the scene of the single-vehicle crash at 5 a.m. on Sept. 18, to find a tractor-trailer that had been hauling car part debris in an open trailer had rolled over on the southbound side of the highway near Exit 35.
The driver was not injured in the crash, police said. However, all four lanes of the highway were closed as the truck had spilled car parts like those found in a junkyard across the road, police said.
Though the left lane has reopened as of 7 a.m., traffic was backed up about nine miles, according to MassDOT. The department’s crash map showed traffic nearly backed up to the New Hampshire border.
Lengthy traffic delays on the southbound side of the highway remain as of 7:30 a.m., police said, as cleanup of the debris is ongoing and three lanes remain closed.
