Richie Williams spoke to reporters on Tuesday afternoon about his transition from assistant coach to interim head coach of the New England Revolution.
But hours later, he seemingly was no longer part of the club.
The Revolution announced personnel changes on Tuesday night, which included Clint Peay, not Williams, being named as interim head coach. In the press release, the Revs also announced they parted ways with assistant coaches Dave van den Bergh and Shalrie Joseph, but had zero mention of Williams.

Williams discussed on Tuesday how he planned to move forward after Bruce Arena’s sudden resignation and whether he’s hoping to continue his career with New England after this season.
“My desire is to continue to be a coach moving forward,” Williams said, per a team-provided transcript. “Again, what I said earlier, I’m contracted currently with the New England Revolution. They’ve asked me to be the interim head coach from now until the end of the season, and that’s where my focus is right now.”
He didn’t make it to the end of the season, however.
It’s unclear what led to the sudden change, but The Athletic came out with a report Tuesday that revealed Revolution players “refused to train” after Arena resigned. The former head coach was suspended and later placed on administrative leave by MLS amid an investigation he made inappropriate and insensitive remarks.
“Not many guys trust Richie leading the team right now,” an annonymous Revolution player told The Athletic.
The report later added that the locker has been “fractured” since Arena resigned.

The Revolution return to the pitch on Saturday night when they host the Colorado Rapids. It’s unclear if there will be any clarity regarding why Williams is seemingly no longer with the club.
