In Saturday’s MIAA Div. lll Central sectional wrestling tournament, East Longmeadow had two first-place finishes to guide it to a fifth place team showing with 127.5 points.
Dedham won the team title with 215 points, followed by Foxborough (202.5), Holliston (174.5) and South Hadley (140.5).
One of the Spartans’ first-place finishes came from Jason Ireland-Schmuck in the 106-pound title bout. In the final round, Ireland-Schmuck held on to win by decision against Ludlow’s Jayden Parker, 13-11.
Throughout the tournament, he had two pins and one technical fall win to reach the final. In the Round of 16, Ireland got a pin within 27 seconds. The semifinal round saw his second pin of the day, this time in 5:21. In the quarter-finals, he won by technical fall in 4:00 and racked up 18 points.
East Longmeadow’s other first-place finish came at 165 pounds with a win from Matthew Ferrero. In the final round, he pinned Quincy Upper’s Jarmanny Rivera in 2:40 to capture the sectional title.
On his journey to the win, Ferrero had two pins and one win by decision. His two pins came in the Round of 16 and quarterfinal round, respectively. In the first round, he pinned his opponent in 30 seconds. For the quarterfinals, Ferrero won via pinball, and for his semifinal round, he advanced with a 4-2 decision.
South Hadley claims a title to finish in 4th
The Tigers’ lone first-place finish Saturday came from Jasiel Ramos (175). To get the win, Ramos won 14-4 against Holliston’s Grady Kiley.
In the road to the final round, Jasiel started the day with a bye. In the quarterfinals, Ramos won after pinning Josh Stivaletta in 1:53 and walked away with six points.
The semifinals saw Ramos win 11-0 against Keefe Tech’s Jonah Zelinksy.
As a team, South Hadley ended the day with 140.5 points.
