Brimfield Flea Market: Here’s what you need to know about heat advisories

The first full week of September is proving that summer is not over yet as heat advisories popped up in parts of the state on the same day that the Brimfield Flea Market starts.

Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 80s to lower 90s and heat indexes will reach well into the 90s Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 5, the National Weather Service said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

As a result, heat advisories were posted for the Connecticut River Valley from Tuesday until Thursday. This specifically applies to the eastern half of Franklin, Hampshire and Hampden counties, according to forecasters.

Under these advisories, heat indexes are expected to reach well into the 90s each afternoon and peak on Thursday, reaching as high as 98 in parts of Western Massachusetts, the weather service said on X.

This extreme heat aligns with the opening day of the Brimfield Flea Market, which will last from Tuesday through Sunday. More than 50,000 people attend the shows each year, making it possibly very crowded.

Since the first couple days of the market will be extremely hot, people should take extra precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

The National Weather Service advises anyone spending time outside to drink plenty of water and take breaks either in the shade or inside.
