WESTFIELD – The Westfield Technical Academy High School boys basketball team won a key matchup Monday evening, defeating McCann Tech 63-56 at home to remain undefeated to begin the season at 2-0.
“We pulled out a great win against a good team,” Westfield Technical Academy boys basketball coach Kyle Dulude said.
Westfield Tech managed to keep it close in the first half with a late surge from Ben Harrington, who hit two 3-pointers and a lay-up to keep his team within shouting distance at the half. The Tigers trailed by just four at the break.
Westfield Tech burst out of the locker rooms. Zac Cook and Josiah Rodriguez combined to hit four consecutive 3-pointers to take the lead.
Dominique Perez was solid throughout, hitting three key buckets and going 4-of-6 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter to help secure the win.
“Overall, it was a total team effort with everyone helping to pitch in,” coach Dulude said. “There were ups and downs throughout, but we were able to keep our composure and were able to pull it off against a very good, well-coached team.”
Westfield Tech entered the showdown with McCann fresh off a 51-42 win over Pathfinder Regional Vocational-Technical in its season opener last Friday night. The Tigers are in the midst of a four-game homestand to begin the season and are scheduled to play six of their first seven games at home. They next host Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School (0-1) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
“We are very excited about starting out hot and going after these early wins,” coach Dulude said. “The plan is to continue to work hard and just focus on us.”
