Isaiah Bolden doing ‘a lot better’ after injury that suspended game

Bill Belichick says that New England Patriots rookie Isaiah Bolden is doing “a lot better” after his scary injury Saturday night.

Bolden was hospitalized following a collision with teammate Calvin Munson that left him motionless on the turf in the fourth quarter of the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. During his Monday appearance on WEEI, Belichick was asked to provide an update on Bolden’s condition as of Monday morning.

Belichick said that he spoke with Bolden and said that the defensive back was “alert,” noting that Bolden checked out well enough medically to fly. The Patriots coach added that Bolden was doing “a lot better” than where he was on Saturday night.

“I talked to Isaiah yesterday. He’s in good spirits, obviously recovering. So, just take it day-to-day. Just take it day-to-day. But certainly seems a lot better today than it looked like Saturday night. So that’s a good thing,” Belichick said. “It’s good for him, flying back with the team, everybody seeing him. He’s got a lot of support here.”

As MassLive’s Mark Daniels reported, Bolden suffered a concussion in the fourth quarter of the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. Bolden appeared to collide with teammate Calvin Munson, sustaining a hit that left him motionless on the turf.

Bolden was transported to nearby Aurora Bay Medical Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin and held overnight for monitoring. On Sunday, the Patriots confirmed that Bolden had been released and flew with the team back to New England.

Belichick made a note to praise the medical staff who came in to help, saying he was impressed by the work that Dr. Scott Martin, Dr. Gian Corrado and head trainer Jim Whalen did on the field.

“Those guys were right on right on top of it. I walked out there to see – and I don’t know anything – just watching them and the way they handled it was, I think, fantastic,” Belichick said.

The Patriots had originally planned to head straight to Tennessee for joint practices with the Titans. However, those plans changed after Bolden’s injury.
