Two are dead after an early morning fire in Chelmsford

Two people have died after an early morning house fire in Chelmsford on Saturday, officials said.

Firefighters responded to the fire at 270 Littleton Road around 4:40 a.m. in the Middlesex County community about 29 miles northwest of Boston.

The first unit to respond to the scene started search efforts, the Chelmsford Fire Department said in a post to its Facebook page.

Firefighters removed two people from the home. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, the department said. The two were both men in their 50s, Boston-25 News reported on Saturday.

One of the men used a wheelchair and had just moved into the home the week before, the station reported, citing the fire department.

The fire is under investigation by the Chelmsford Fire Department, Chelmsford Police Department, Massachusetts State Police, and the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy,” the department said in its Facebook post.

“Investigators found no working smoke alarms at the scene,” State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine said in a statement. “We can’t stress enough how important smoke alarms are to surviving a fire at home — especially when we’re sleeping. Please take a few minutes today to be sure you and your loved ones are protected.”
