Temperatures will likely exceed 90 degrees across Massachusetts on Wednesday, with humidity making it feel even warmer, as the intense heat and humidity that have blanketed the region drags on.
The heat will reach its peak in the afternoon, when heat indices, or “feels like” temperatures, could hit 100 in parts of the Bay State like the Connecticut River and Merrimack valleys.
As the day goes on, a cold front will approach the state, bringing the chance for showers and thunderstorms in the early to mid-afternoon in southern New England. Models increasingly support thunderstorms as far east as Boston. National Weather Service forecasters say they are most confident in showers and storms west of Worcester.
Any storms that do form will have the potential to create heavy downpours in parts of the state, thanks to increased moisture in the air. That said, the potential for severe storms is low.
The storms should break in the evening, giving way to a warm and muggy night.
More storms are possible on Thursday. Those storms could be capable of heavy downpours, with a risk of localized flooding in urban and poor-drainage areas. Despite the risk of flooding, forecasters say the risk of severe thunderstorms remains low.
In the wake of the pair of cold fronts, an area of high pressure will move in, bringing much cooler temperatures, in the mid-to-high 70s, along the East Coast. It will be substantially warmer along the interior, with highs in the low-to-mid 80s.
Temperatures will remain seasonable on Saturday, ranging from the low to high 80s.
“Expect abundant sunshine on both Friday and Saturday,” forecasters wrote.
Another round of hot weather is expected after Saturday, with temperatures climbing to the mid-to-high 80s, and heat indices in the low 90s by Sunday afternoon. But that heat is expected to be short-lived, with the chance for another round of thunderstorms on Monday.
As a cold front moves through next week, southern New England could see conditions more akin to fall than the middle of summer. The chance for temperatures above 80 degrees Monday through Wednesday is pegged at less than 50%, according to the weather service.
