Former Patriots quarterback has an innovative idea for a sports TV show

Cam Newton pitched a new idea to ESPN that included elevating historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU) and believes he can bring a Pat McAfee-level of spotlight to them.

“I want to be a part of the Black college football gameday,” the former NFL quarterback said during a recent episode of his “4th & 1″ podcast.

“You talk about the content, then you can start showing the tailgates, the student section,” Newton added. “When it comes to box offices, I can show you what’s interesting about HBCUs. Well, you talking about the content? Which one of these members of the media is willing to go into the student section? I am. This is the sweetest gig in sports.”

The 2015 NFL MVP has a slew of knowledge when it comes to HBCUs. Last season, Newton joined Stephen A. Smith and Shannon Sharpe on “First Take” live during the Morehouse–Clark Atlanta game. Newton is also never afraid to speak his mind and would bring a lot of energy to something he’s passionate about.

ESPN’s “College Gameday” as well as FOX’s “Big Noon Kickoff” have found a way to elevate their coverage of college football every weekend with McAfee on ESPN and FOX recently joining forces with Barstool Sports to bolster the network’s college football coverage.

Now Newton wants to see something that will help bring that same kind of coverage to HBCU’s. The one-time quarterback has the energy and charisma to fill that kind of role and bring the attention to these schools.

Whether it comes to fruition remains to be seen, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Newton step up and make it happen himself if the networks don’t.
