Kids taken to hospital after lightning strike near camp cabin in New England

Multiple children were taken to the hospital Friday after lightning struck near the cabin they were inside at a camp in New Hampshire, authorities said.

Firefighters in Moultonborough, New Hampshire responded to nine different reports of lightning strikes within around 30 minutes Friday, one of which involved the four children at Camp Tecumseh. The children were sheltering in their cabin in accordance with the camp’s severe weather protocols when lightning struck trees outside the cabin, according to a statement from Moultonborough Fire Rescue.

When first responders arrived, they found the kids in the the care of camp medical staff in the camp infirmary following the lightning strike. The children were taken to local hospitals for precautionary treatment, the statement said.

There was initially a report of people having been struck by lightning, but authorities clarified none of the campers were struck by lightning.

During the roughly 30 minutes the storm lasted in the New Hampshire town, firefighters responded to lightning strikes on Eagle Shore Road, Gansy Lane, Garwood Lane, Hall Lane, Moultonborough Neck Road and Wallace Point Road. They also responded to two lightning strikes on Tanglewood Shore Road, according to the statement.

“Due to the simultaneous nature of the incidents, Center Harbor firefighters were requested to respond to incidents on Tanglewood Shores Road. Only minor property damage was reported as the result of the multiple lightning strikes,” the statement noted.
