Report: Mark Fenisand: “The Mets and Astros appeared to be closing in on a deal for Justin Verlander late Monday night, per source, but “things have really cooled down” today. The sticking point appears to be about the players that would go back to the Mets, not the money in the deal.”

Trade: Sahadev Sharma: “Cubs and Rays make a small deal according to sources: Adrian Sampson, Manny Rodríguez and IFA money go to the Rays for minor-league pitcher Josh Roberson.”

Trade: Kansas City Royals: “We have acquired LHP Tucker Davidson from the Los Angeles Angels for cash considerations.  Davidson has been added to the 40-man roster and will report to the big league club.”

Report: Jon Heyman: “One mystery team on Justin Verlander has been uncovered: the San Diego Padres.”

Report: Bob Nightengale: “Meanwhile, the #Astros are the heavy favorites to land Justin Verlander IF he is traded.”

Report: Jack Harris: “Plan A is a pursuit of New York Mets ace Justin Verlander — a potential blockbuster deal that remains on the table ahead of Tuesday’s 3 p.m. Pacific deadline, but will require the teams to bridge gaps on both the prospect return the Dodgers would send to New York, as well as how much of Verlander’s contract the Mets are willing to pay down.

“Plan B could be a pivot to Detroit Tigers left-hander Eduardo Rodríguez — a 30-year-old veteran who is having a career-best year and could become a free agent this winter.”

Report: Mark Fenisand: “Eduardo Rodriguez’s name continues to be a hot one on the trade market. The Padres are said to be high on him, per sources, and could make a push to land him.”
